The eagle was discovered in the back yard of a residential home on Route 8, and died soon afterward at a wildlife rehabilitation facility. Wildlife officials believe the bird may have suffered for days from its injuries before being discovered.
While Bald Eagles are no longer on the endangered species list, they are a threatened species. Only 100 pairs of eagles nest in Pennsylvania.
"We're appealing to the public to come forward with any information available regarding this troubling situation," states Jim Bonner, Executive Director of Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania. Bonner has personally contributed $500 to start the reward fund.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting should contact the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Northwest regional office, at 814-432-3187 or 814-432-3188. Individuals interested in adding to the reward fund should contact the Development Department at Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, 412-963-6100 or use our contact page.
