This summer, Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania offers new and exciting options to come outside and learn with us!  Our summer day camps are designed for kids ages 5-14. Campers explore the outdoors, visit the pond, make crafts, observe birds and other wildlife, and, of course, have lots of fun!  Each session is unique—only the fun stays the same!  Choose your location, and then join us for one, two or more sessions—you decide!

Children entering Kindergarten through 6th grade are welcome to attend our ½ day sessions.  Combine a morning and afternoon session—within the same week at the same location— and receive a free bonus hour of camp each day (12:00p—1:00p chaperoned lunch and recess session).  Be sure to sign up for the camp that fits your age—it’s designed especially for you.  And because each session is designed to be different, you can attend the entire summer and experience something new each day!

Children and youth entering 5th—8th grade are welcome to attend our full-day themed camps.  From birding to fossil-hunting, you spend your days outdoors learning new skills and having fun in the process.  The great thing about our themed camps is it brings together campers from different grade levels who have the same interests, creating a unique opportunity for mentorship in learning.

SUMMER CAMP ADVENTURES:

Children Entering Grades K—6

10 unique half-day sessions offered at both Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve and Succop Conservancy

Eco-Bugs For children entering Kindergarten or 1st grade this fall.

Designed for kids who are on the go, love playing games, making crafts, and exploring the outdoors. Our campers love to jump like a toad, zing like a dragonfly, and sway like a tree. We’ll broaden your child’s eco-horizons with treks through forests, fields and ponds to see birds, bugs, frogs and foxes!

Path Finders For children entering 2nd or 3rd grade this fall.

Is your child all about journey and discovery? Their keen sense of adventure will lead them to Path Finders, a camp for kids who love following trails to discover what’s around the next bend. We’ll develop their discovery skills and help them to find natural treasures.

Junior Naturalists For children entering 4th, 5th or 6th grade this fall.

Kids who enjoy the outdoors and love the science of nature are Junior Naturalists in the making. They love to identify, observe and explore—and have fun in the process. We’ll help them to discover their place in this world and encourage their desire to make a positive difference.

Children Entering Grades 5—8

4 themed full-day sessions based at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve, Succop Conservancy or both

Birdz

Birding is cool, fun, and the fastest-growing outdoor activity in America. Campers will develop new skills by spending quality time in the field with the correct equipment, and our expert guide, Bob VanNewkirk. Included are visits to Todd Nature Reserve and North Park, with a trip to Pymatunning to see Bald Eagles rounding out the week. Each participant will receive a birding field pack complete with binoculars, field guides, & checklists. Offered at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve and Succop Conservancy.

Wild About Birdz (prior participation in Birdz camp required)

This camp is for those who have taken our Birdz course, enjoy birds and bird-watching, and are serious about sharpening their skills. We will travel to some of Western PA’s “birdiest” locations to hike and explore. Included are visits to the National Aviary for tropical birding, and Presque Isle State Park for shore birding. A special nighttime Owl Prowl at Todd Nature Reserve—with real owls—completes this week of birding adventure. Offered at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve.

Wilderness Skills for Survival

These are the skills you need to know now! Learn to recognize the best plants to use when building proper shelters and fires, then build them! Secure your shelter with knots using natural fibers, and cook over an open fire like a pro. Orient yourself with just nature as your guide during an all-day trip to a local State Park. A visit to Todd Nature Reserve rounds out the week. Offered at Succop Conservancy.

Rocks, Fossils and Friends

You dig rocks? So do we! Learn to identify soils, rocks and minerals. Start a personal rock collection and make your own crystals. Travel to Hell’s Hollow to see limestone flumes and Angel Falls. The trail of geology at Moraine State Park will lead you to eskers and kettle holes. And a hike at Kennedy Mills will awaken the stratigraphy of 250 million years!! Offered at Succop Conservancy.

Youth Entering Grades 9—12

Offered at both Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve and Succop Conservancy

ANTS: Audubon Naturalist-in-Training Staff

ANTS is for teens who love to be outside and work with children. ANTS assist our Outdoor Discovery Camp staff in leading nature exploration, trail hikes, games, and crafts for kids ages 5--12. ANTS must attend a 1-day 4-hour training course in June (dates vary by location), and commit to 30 hours of service. ANTS who successfully complete the program receive a certificate and a special ASWP token of appreciation!
